How to Make A Respiratory Relief Tincture

At Homemade Health, our vision is to help lead individuals towards more natural approaches to health management. We strive to accomplish this by not only developing our own chemical-free products but also by sharing some of our preferred natural remedies that we personally make and use for ourselves and our own families.

In this video I will give a quick example of how to make a basic tincture.

The recipe I am sharing is pretty potent, I like to add extra herbs in my blend but you are welcome to adjust the ratios and amounts of herbs used to create your own blend.

What is a Tincture?

Plant tincture's have been used for a millennia as a natural herbal remedy. Many plants have proven benefits, while others are not as well proven, ensure you do your due diligence and research the plants you will be using to create your own tincture, (as some plants can be harmful to your health). Always consult with your medical practitioner prior to starting any herbal supplement to ensure there are no adverse reactions with medications you are taking, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Tinctures are concentrated herbal extracts made by soaking the plant materials (bark, berries, leaves) dried or fresh, or roots from one or more plants in alcohol or vinegar.

The alcohol or vinegar (also known as the solvent) pulls out the active ingredients from the plant parts, concentrating them as a liquid.

Tinctures make it easy to consume the natural health-boosting chemicals found in some plants. They’re usually inexpensive to make and can be easily prepared at home.

The accessibility of herbal remedies like tinctures is probably a major reason why an estimated 80 percent of the world population relies on these treatments for at least some of their healthcare needs.

Here are some quick points about the benefits of the ingredients used in the recipe I have shared:

Thyme- is anti-viral (opposes the action of a virus), anti-microbial (fights against microbes/germs), anti-inflammatory (helps to soothe inflammation) and a natural expectorant (helps to facilitate the removal of secretions and phlegm).

Thyme can help to loosen bronchial muscles and thin mucus and is loaded with vitamins A, C as we as iron and magnesium.

Mullein- is a natural expectorant (helps to facilitate the removal of secretions and phlegm), and Demulcent (helps to reduce inflammation of mucous membranes).

Rosemary- natural expectorant (helps to facilitate the removal of secretions and phlegm), anti-inflammatory (helps to soothe inflammation), anti-microbial (fights against microbes/germs), anti-spasmodic (helps to calm nerves, muscular spasms and convulsions).

Apple cider vinegar (organic & non-gmo)- made from fermented unstrained juice of crushed apples and can be used to help alleviate congestion. Apple cider vinegar has been used since the 1800s to help treat persistent coughs.
